The cycling season is drawing to a close, and as always it will be wrapped up by the final Monument of the year: Il Lombardia 2025, the much-anticipated Classic of the Falling Leaves. From Como to Bergamo, one last brutal effort awaits the riders, with 241 kilometers with hardly any flat ground to play with. The startlist, as ever, is five-star quality. This is the race where all the big names gather to deliver one last jaw-dropping show for the fans before putting the bike aside for a few weeks and heading off for some well-earned rest.
Il Lombardia 2025, the Route: Will Passo di Ganda Prove Decisive?
Beyond its 241 km length, the race will serve up a string of brutal climbs, the kind that sap the legs just by looking at them. It opens with the Madonna del Ghisallo, the iconic ascent that is a fixture of Il Lombardia. But it’s the final 145 km that will make the race truly selective: first the Roncola Alta (9.4 km at 6.6%), then Berbenno (6.8 km at 4.6%), followed by the Passo della Crocetta (11 km at 6.2%) and Zambia Alta (9.5 km at 3.5%). Finally comes the Passo di Ganda (9.2 km at 7.3%), cresting just 32 km from the finish before the fast plunge down to Bergamo.
Before the finish in Bergamo, the riders will face the iconic, fan-packed ramp into the Città Alta, via Largo Colle Aperto – one last kilometer at 7.9%, with ramps up to 12% and plenty of cobblestones. It’s the final chance to resist the inevitable. After that, it’s celebration time and the curtain call on the season.
