Registration for the Gran Fondo Il Lombardia, which takes place on Sunday 8 October, is now open. The event will take place a few hours after the Classica delle Foglie Morte (“the Classic of the Dead Leaves”), on parts of the route raced by the pro riders the day before.
Organised by RCS Active Team, this year’s Gran Fondo Il Lombardia takes place on Sunday 8 October, the day after the Il Lombardia 2017 – the so-called “Classic of the Dead Leaves” that traditionally closes the European professional cycling season. The Gran Fondo route will take riders from Como to Como, over a 118.2km long route with more than 2700m of vertical elevation.
The Gran Fondo Il Lombardia brings together the unique charm of its beautiful route with the opportunity for amateur riders to measure themselves against their heroes by riding on the very same roads the pros raced the day before and is a key part what makes the Gran Fondo Il Lombardia so special. This year’s event aims to build on the success achieved in the spring by the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche, in which 5000 riders took part.
The route starts from Como and takes riders to Onno, on the eastern branch of Lake Como before heading north to take the mountain road in Regatola. Riders will then face two epic ascents: firstly the Madonna del Ghisallo and then the Muro di Sormano, with gradients up to 27%. Following these major climbs, the route turns and makes it way back to Como and a final with the two climbs of Civiglio and San Fermo della Battaglia to test the endurance of the riders.
Gran Fondo riders will start at 7.30am on Sunday 8 October and be allowed a maximum time to complete the route of 7 hours. After the finish of the Gran Fondo prizes will be awarded to the top ten teams, the first three men and women, and also to the winners of each category, for both men and women.
To complete an intense cycling weekend in Lombardy, the Comitato Provinciale Comasco of the FCI (the Como Provincial Committee of the Italian Cycling Federation), in collaboration with the associations Pedale Appianese and the ACSD Remo Calzolari da Moreno organize the 54esima Giornata Nazionale della Bicicletta (54th National Bicycle Day) for 15-16 and 17-18 year old riders. The events always start in Como, just a few hours after the Gran Fondo Il Lombardia, with the finish line on the summit of the Madonna del Ghisallo (754 meters).
